The virtue of virtus.

In this interview I drop GEMS that I’ve been cooking up for the past few months. I talk about the paradigm shifts that I’ve developed, design practices used and lessons I’ve learned that led up to how I made the AWARD WINNING music virtu, Freaky Friday. Plug in and soak up some game! Big shoutout to the homie Byron for reaching out to have me on, and big ups to the rest of the Stereoscope squad Anthony and Shawn.

Best for Questies, Pico ppl, & flatscreens

But if you just wanna watch a flat screen (not as cool) version, here you go:

Paradigm shiftin

The main thing I wanted to hammer home in this discussion was the fact that virtu creators need to shoot for the end viewing experience; viewing in a headset. WHICH MEANS, the camera represents a viewer’s head. So when you treat the camera as just a camera, trying to get typical b-roll cover, you’re treating the viewer as an object.

Virtuography is the art of creating a simulation through a captured moment in time.

That means we need to treat the immersive camera like a person, regardless of whether they’re an invisible witness or an in-the-room victim role. Use camera angles and heights that represent the way a person would stand/sit in the room, and “look” at things at the angle and proximity they naturally would irl. And if you’re gonna use camera angles outside of the human body, then at least give it context. Up in the sky? Acknowledge you’re a bird or a drone. Low on the floor? Maybe you shrunk or you’re a puppy. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE.

In 2D, if you were to get shots of a nice car, you might do ultra tight shots to show off certain details. But what does a tight shot mean in immersive video? A tight shot is holding the viewers head unnaturally close to the subject. Few people would choose to do that. But maybe folks would crouch down and be half-an-armslength from the subject. Ya get me?

tl;dr – THE CAMERA IS A VIEWER’S HEAD

Thanks again to the Stereoscope crew for having me on. Could’ve done another hour just shooting the shit. Be sure to give them a like and if you liked the conversation, subscribe to them as well!
